Welding particulates can range in size from nanometers to typically 1um and thus only certain particle instruments on the market can measure these properly. In early 2025 Alpha Scientific was awarded another contract for the supply of monitoring equipment to measure indoor air quality and welding fumes.

Welding fumes were of particular interest as our client was a large national organization with vast workshops and many staff welding different materials day to day. The organization (like many others) was concerned about their welders however they were also concerned about the background levels of welding particulates and how these may impact staff working in offices and background environments.

Of the various choices of air quality and particulate monitors Alpha Scientific offered, this customer opted to install Palas AQ Guard Portable air quality monitors which may be easily moved around the facility as required. In addition to simultaneous PM fraction particle monitoring, these units monitor temperature, humidity, CO2, atmospheric pressure and TVOC’s in real-time. These specific devices are MCERTS certified and are recognized as being one of the most accurate measurement devices of their type on the market.

Data can be accessed directly from the instrument via Wi-Fi, Ethernet LAN or via the free cloud based platform we offer. Incorporating this technology will enable our customer to accurately measure airborne aerosols such as welding particulates in their work environment. While there were lower cost instruments on the market to measure particulates, our customer quickly recognized the differences between the numerous options and did not hesitate to invest in our better technology in an effort to properly safeguard their staff.
